Maryport (once known as Alauna by the Romans) is an 18th century planned town and was once a major Roman seaport. it's located on the west coast of Cumbria, overlooking the Solway Firth towards Scotland. It is an active town which has over 2000 years of seafaring history!

Maryport was once a village that was developed and expanded by Humphrey Senhouse, the town was named after his wife Mary during the 18th century. Visit the Maritime Museum, Lakeland Studios and the Senhouse Roman Museum which all promise to give an interesting family outing for visitors and tourists.

Come and explore Maryport, once the site of a significant Roman Fort known as 'Uxellodunum', the Georgian buildings and Victorian docks. The town has strong connections to the White Star Line who were owners of the "Titanic", and Fletcher Christian who is famous for the 'Mutiny on the Bounty', more information on which can be found at Maryport Maritime Museum.

The main industries of Maryport have included; coal, ship building, rope/sail works, iron foundries, saw mills, breweries and tanneries.

Maryport features a large marina, many interesting shops and numerous exciting attractions including the popular Lake District Coast Aquarium, an award winning attraction specialising in native British aquatic life which boasts some fantastic displays of our weird and wonderful fish.
