The Romans built the fort Uxellodunum in Alauna which is now called Maryport around the period AD 122. It was developed as a command base for the coastal defences to protect the western end of Hadrian's Wall, preventing the wall being bypassed by a sailing across the Solway Firth. Some remains of the Roman fort still exist, it was the last and most southerly in a series of forts for this purpose which were dotted along the coast from the end of Hadrian's Wall.
It is thought that the Roman name for the fort and settlement "Alauna" at Maryport is derived from a Celtic word which may describe its location, meaning "beautiful".
